Do you know what a Meg is? Do you
know whether your PowerPoint presentation will fit onto a single diskette?
If you're hurriedly trying to back-up some documents for your boss to travel
with (even if it's just to the conference room for a meeting), is now the
time to learn about media capacity or how to create a CD?
Did you answer "no" to any of those questions? If so, plan ahead by learning
a few things about technology. Technology is a growing part of an
administrative professional's job these days. And when your boss has
technology questions (especially if he or she is not technically savvy),
you're expected to know the quick answers.
Here are some brief facts and terms dealing with computer technology to get
you started as the office technology expert (another great value-added skill
you can bring to your employer).
Q: What's the storage capacity of a floppy diskette, CD, or DVD?
A: Your ordinary 3.5" floppy diskette has a capacity of 1.44 MB; an
80-minutes CD holds 700 MB; and a DVD holds 4.7 GB. The capacity is written
on these mediums. Other portable magnetic media such as optical disks can
store large amounts of data, as in gigabytes, BUT they are expensive too.
Flash drives, discussed below, are another good and affordable data storage
option.
Q: What's the storage capacity of portable flash memory devices?
A: Flash Drives, ThumbDrives or TravelDrives are portable mediums for
backing-up files or transporting files between computers. You plug the
device into your USB port. You don't need special or compatible hardware,
cables or software. These drives act as hard drives. These portable drives
come in various compact (pocket) sizes with capacities ranging on average
from 128MB to 2.0GB. Data downloads quickly onto these media (quicker than
onto diskettes). Higher capacity drives cost more money....
