Special training or attributes needed or helpful to get job in this industry (or specific department):  On job training. I was offered position because of my initiative to help out in any areas needed while I was working for my company through a temp agency (as the receptionist or any other odd jobs they had for me). I did anything needed of me and answered questions (if I didn’t know the answer, I found someone who did- NETWORKING- Huge!!!).

 

Number of managers and/or staff supported:  3 (+ support other offices as needed)

 

Typical work hours:  I don’t have set hours. I typically arrive at work between 7:15 AM and 8:00 AM and leave between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM. There are times I work longer hours, but I have flexibility with time off when I need it too. We don’t tally up the hours, but we figure it works itself out.

 

Weekends or overtime hours:  I work lots of overtime- usually every week. I am paid a yearly salary, so no paid overtime, but I do get bonuses that make up for that.

 

General salary range (Note: This is a general figure or range provided by survey respondent and may NOT be an exact salary in order to give survey respondent some privacy. Also you must take into account that the number of years worked in industry/department may contribute to this salary as well as criteria such as level of position and person reports to, required hours and geographical location.):  Depending on tenure and experience, the range is between $24,000 and $50,000.

 

Benefits (direct or indirect):  Great benefits- health/ dental/ eye insurance, 401k , 2 weeks paid vacation/ year, paid sick days, paid holidays, and employee education reimbursement.

A typical day on the job:  There is no typical day. Every day is different. Some very busy. Some very slow. Each day I learn something new. My bosses have hectic schedules and I try to keep them running a smooth as possible.

 

Positive things about being an administrative professional in this industry: 

1. I get to help people- which is my niche.

 

2. I meet new people everyday!

 

3. Knowledge! There is so much to learn and everyone is willing to teach you anything you want to know!

 

Negative things about being an administrative professional in this industry:  I wear many “hats”, which is not always a bad thing. It can just be overwhelming sometimes.

 

Type of workspace/office:  cubicle (plus sometimes work from home)

 

Primary responsibilities as an administrative professional in this position: 

1. Travel arrangements

 

2. Reporting – I create new reports and update existing reports.

 

3. Planning for meetings.

 

4. Support assistants from other offices and for the management teams they support.

Technology (hard) skills used regularly:  Definitely using Microsoft Excel for creating spreadsheets. This has been trial and error. I have taught myself more than any class ever taught me.

 

Critical soft skills:  CONSTANT COMMUNICATION – this is probably the key to my job! My boss and I communicate on what our goals are. That keeps us on the same page on what we each should be focusing on. Networking is another very important skill. If you don’t have the answers- know who does!
