Special training or attributes needed or helpful to get job in this industry (or specific department):  Nothing special other than maybe a driver’s license and better than average grammar skills.

 

Number of managers and/or staff supported:  57

 

Typical work hours:  7:30 – 4:30pm

 

Weekends or overtime hours:  No overtime or weekends, and yes we would get time and half.

 

General salary range (Note: This is a general figure or range provided by survey respondent and may NOT be an exact salary in order to give survey respondent some privacy. Lingo you might hear in this industry: 

Speed humps/bumps – Speed humps are the full length humps that are installed across the street or road and Speed bumps are the small to medium size round bumps along side the road or down the median.

ROW; Right-Of-Way – The distance from the road/street to and on the property owners land that is owned by the Municipality or the State for acquisition.

 

A typical day on the job: 

• Answering phone calls regarding missing street name, signs, and other signs that are needed and other requests for meetings, people etc…


• Looking up area grids for information regarding signs


• Putting all requests for signs and such in our database for our technician(s) to go out and look at the situation.


• Adding/Deleting items on the website


• Readying outgoing interoffice and post office mail


• Working the ROW Special Activity Permits


• Working on items for the director and work on his schedule


• Other items as needed for the department


• Fixing paper jams or adding toner in the copiers or printers or calling maintenance for the machines


• Answering questions from the general public


• Informing the public that the Traffic Department does not handle traffic tickets, they need to call the traffic court


• Handling walk-in customers for plats, subdivision, driveways etc…


• Made packets for transportation planning for meetings


• Ordering supplies online


• Make sure lights are out and main door is locked

 

That's just a little bit of my day.

 

Positive things about being an administrative professional in this industry:  Working with people, it’s something different every day.

 

Negative things about being an administrative professional in this industry:  Working with people, sometimes the constant change and demand on your time for everyone else’s work and not being able to work on your own projects.

 

Type of workspace/office:  open cubicle

 

Primary responsibilities as an administrative professional in this position:  Answering phones, director’s calendar, special activity permits, taking sign requests, and website work
