What Some Administrative professionals Want for
Administrative Professionals Day®
March 16, 2005, Bloomingdale, GA --Not sure how or even if you should
recognize your administrative professional during Administrative
Professionals Week®? If you're the boss, it's your call. (But perhaps you
should check with your administrative professional first.) Below are some
excerpts of thoughts on recognition (or not) on that day from some
administrative professionals who subscribe to The Effective Admin
newsletter (www.admin-ezine.com). Hint: Sincere recognition and
appreciation; company-paid training and a day at the spa (you can call the
latter a stress management treatment) wouldn't hurt for some. But a bonus
or a day off also have merit. And oh yea...plants...but only if you really
mean it.
The Effective Admin asked "How do you prefer to be recognized on
Administrative Professionals Day in April? (Or do you prefer to be
recognized?)" Some subscribers said:
►"I would like to be sent to an admin conference for the day. What a great
way to make an admin assistant feel special----with a conference that
includes a luncheon, free take-aways from the conference and great
speakers to help us be more successful at our jobs. I usually get things
like cards, gift certificates, or flowers; and 1) cards are very cheesy
and usually end up in the trash; 2) gift certificates sometimes get lost
in the drawer or never used; 3) flowers are beautiful... while they last.
Lasting value will come from knowledge and newly learned skills and tools
that will make me more effective in my job. "
►"I think the best recognition is by just being recognized! A simple
'thank you' is enough. Monetary items are very flattering, but is that
what you are all about? My job is diversified and it makes me feel good
when everyone else is content and happy around me. Knowing that I have
made a difference is all I need to know!"
►"Last year, I received three candles, which my boss at the time went out
and bought only after I reminded him that it was administrative
professionals day. I am no longer working at the position. ...I would love
some paid training day type activity or just a nice plant. Some sort of
recognition for all of the hard work that I put in each day would be
nice."
►"Time off would be ideal."
►"I prefer having the day off to attend a great conference for
administrative professionals. It would be even better if my boss paid for
it! Of course, I never turn down any form of recognition! Something is
better than nothing (which is the norm around here)."
►"I would love to get anything that appears to be true recognition, not
something that's obviously a last minute guilt trip because the boss
happened to be in the grocery store the night before. ..."
►"I think the coolest thing would be a day at the spa to be pampered!"
►"Thank you card with a handwritten note."
