WHO I AM

My name is Karen Porter. I'm The Administrative Professional Job Performance and Career Success Coach and founder and president of The Effective Admin and the Virtual Association for Administrative Professionals. I'm also a former administrative professional who has held positions at lateral and higher levels in companies and organizations too.

I advise administrative professionals about their job performance and career management, providing tips and guidance.

The Basic Guide to Goal Setting for Administrative Professionals is one of my downloadable informational publications for administrative professionals. You get it free, along with a lot of other resources for admins, when you join the Virtual Association for Administrative Professionals (VAAP).

     You can do so here:

As a former admin myself, I know the confusion and difficulty you encounter trying to set administrative professional goals. I was once in your shoes -- and only wish that back then I had a resource, or mentor, to make this goal-setting task easier.

     I didn't!

But now you do; I've created this guide to help you set your goals as an administrative professional. It's a resource you can use immediately because it's instantly downloadable.

So if your goals are due to your boss tomorrow, relax -- you can start working on them in the next five minutes.

Even if you're writing admin job and career goals for yourself and not your boss, you'll find this goal setting guide for administrative professionals useful.

But let's be clear: This publication won't write your goals for you. And it will not provide you goals that you just copy and transfer to your performance appraisal (or wherever you're writing them). What it will do is assist you with brainstorming goals and add clarity to the process of goal setting as an administrative professional.

There are no one size fits all goals for administrative professionals. Every admin job in every department in every company does differ and each administrative professional should have different workplace goals. (Don't let anyone tell you that all administrative professionals essentially do the same thing and thus should share the same goals. That's not true!)

HOW I CAN HELP YOU

WRITE GOALS NOW

My goal-setting guide is easy to understand. This easy to follow guide lays out a step-by-step process for administrative assistants or executive assistants to set goals. It's a springboard that will help you to brainstorm your own personalized goals in your workplace. This is all accomplished with simple definitions, guidelines and even admin-specific examples.

ARE YOU LOST?

If you're lost with no clue how to start writing goals to put on your performance appraisal, start with this goal-setting guide.

If your boss is asking you to set goals and you have no idea what he or she is talking about, start here.

If you've been writing goals for your performance evaluations for years until you can't think of one more thing to write, start with this guide. It'll help to rejuvenate your brain so you start spitting out more ideas for goals than you've had in a long, long time.

WHAT YOUR ADMIN PEERS SAY ABOUT THE GOAL-SETTING GUIDE

The goal-setting guide doesn't work for every administrative professional -- because every admin thinks differently -- but most admin professional clients who use it find it useful. I know because they tell me so. Give it a try if you're struggling to set performance or personal work-related goals. Here's what some of your administrative professional colleagues wrote me about this goal-setting guide for administrative professionals.

"Your goals setting publication allowed me to think of my goals from a completely different perspective and [this] was the first time in 20 years that I have not stressed over my annual review. I was prepared for it and in fact, looked forward to it."

Judy Santiago

Executive Assistant

San Antonio, Texas

"Great tool! I purchased the workbook due to the fact I am with a new company and was asked to write goals for 2009. I haven't written professional goals in a while and wanted to be sure I was writing w/some guidance."

Nancy
Executive Assistant
Akron OH

"I purchased Goal Setting for Administrative Professionals because I can use some help in setting my professional goals. I’ve been an assistant for over 25 years, but I don’t want to feel like I’m too set in my ways. A little assistance in looking at things from another perspective never hurts.

[The sections about] The Questions that Inspire Goal-Setting and the Specific Professional Goals were very helpful in providing a new viewpoint to approaching goal-setting.

I think you’ve done a great job of providing a variety of information needed by today’s administrative professionals."

Cathey Kuhn
Sr. Administrative Assistant
Marietta, GA

"I purchased the Admin Goal setting to better improve my own personal/professional goals. It is helping me think outside the box and giving me more ideas.

[The section about] Specific Administrative Professional Goals is helping me add more responsibilities to my current duties, by way of goal setting."

Stephanie Cole
Administrative Assistant
Coppell, TX

"I purchased this product because I was preparing for my yearly evaluation at work, and I was having difficulty determining new goals and objectives. The information I received was very helpful and I was able to identify the objectives and goals that I want in my current position.

I thought it was very well written and very easy to understand and comprehend. It gave me insight into things that I hadn't considered before, [especially the section about] 7 Things You Need to Know in Order to Set Professional Goals at Work"

Jackie Brantley

Administrative Assistant
Nashville, TN

"The Basic Guide To Goal Setting For Administrative Professionals was a lifesaver. It helped me set realistic and clearly defined goals.

...My manager asked me to set goals and objectives for the year. The tips helped me to give careful consideration of setting a goal and trying to reach a measure that is reasonable yet challenging. I was able to include the training or developmental initiatives that I felt would assist in my personal development.

I was so proud of how I lined the goals up with the corporate and division goals/vision."

Audrey G. Nesbit
Administrative Assistant
Columbia, South Carolina

"I bought [The Basic Guide to Goal Setting] because I was doing my annual review and needed some wording on my goals! The product was great - exactly what I needed."

Debbie Heckler
Sales Office Manager
Austin, TX

"I purchased your information on goals for executive assistants and found it to be very helpful. My boss asked me to brainstorm goals for myself to be discussed at my annual performance appraisal. It is difficult to develop goals as a person in a supportive role with no 'portfolio' of my own.

I found the product to be very useful - the information helped me to create some meaningful goals that I think will allow me to contribute to the overall success of my organization."

Tracy Bond
Senior Administrative Assistant
Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA

"I thought the information on goal setting and performance review was fantastic. It was of great help to me. The tips were usable in my workplace."

Cheryl Himburg
Administrative Assistant
Kitchener, Ontario Canada

"I loved this! I found it to be very helpful. Especially the 7 Things You need to know in order to set professional goals at work. That helped me begin thinking on the right track."

Jaclyn Mattson
Administrative Support Assistant III
Chico, CA

"The goal setting article was fantastic. I was able to set some personal goals with my boss for the upcoming year. The goals were ones that I was able to think about and come up with, then present them to my boss. They are inline with our company vision and what my boss has set for her own goals."

Adera
Administrative Secretary
San Diego, CA

"I purchased the Goal Setting materials to help me with writing my individual development plan for work.

In the Basic Guide to Goal Setting, the section on types of goals was very helpful. It stimulated my thinking about what I could consider as goals.
The Results vs. Activities section was informative. I really thought the whole document was very well put together. It was just the right amount of information."

Renee Thomsen
